    About the print:

Tukula print is a playful interpretation of kuba cloth - a textile traditionally handwoven by the Kuba people of the Democratic Republic of Congo. Kuba cloth is woven using the strands from raffia palm leaves that are then dyed using natural dyes. This fabric originated in the 17th century and is characterized by bold patterns that suggest movement. Of the 17 ways that a design can be repetitively varied on a surface, the Kuba people have exploited twelve in their cloths! Amazing. Historically, the Kuba people have used these cloths as wrappers, skirts, sleeping mats and even currency. This print is named "Tukula,” the Bakuba word for the red pigment obtained from the heartwood of indigenous trees and traditionally applied to art and cloth created by the Kuba people.

Why it's useful

  • Beanies protect your baby's scalp from the sun and keep the baby warm in the winter.
  • Thicker winter hats can keep your baby warm when it's especially cold remember that babies lose a lot of heat from their heads!
  • Note that beanies or hats should NOT be worn to sleep to avoid the risk of overheating.

What to consider

Material Safety

  • GOTS or OEKO-TEX certification: We recommend GOTS or OEKO-TEX certified beanies/hats made from natural materials to minimize the risk of dermal exposure to harsh chemicals. Read more here
  • Important! We recommend pre-washing all textile baby items before using to minimize the chance that any residual chemicals or packing dust don’t irritate your baby’s skin.

Size

  • Make sure to choose the appropriate size. Babies’ heads change size significantly during the first year; look for hats that stay on without being too tight.

How many to get

You only need 1-2 hats depending on the climate(s) you live in/will be visiting.
